Utopai Studios and DeNA Co., Ltd. have announced a collaborative partnership focused on integrating artificial intelligence into animation production workflows in Japan. The initiative will incorporate Utopai’s PAI storytelling system into experimental projects led by DeNA’s Entertainment Development Business Unit, marking a significant expansion of AI-assisted animation capabilities in one of the world’s largest animation markets.
Under the partnership structure, Utopai specialists will work directly alongside DeNA’s creative teams to support visual development, character and environment design, scene planning, and production iteration. Importantly, DeNA’s artists retain full creative authority over narrative elements, aesthetic direction, performances, and overall tone, with final approval on all creative decisions remaining in human hands. The arrangement operates as a separate initiative distinct from DeNA’s other ongoing animation projects.
PAI distinguishes itself by maintaining continuity across extended projects rather than generating isolated content fragments. Once creative elements receive approval, the system can carry those assets forward throughout subsequent scenes and episodes, streamlining the workflow from initial visualization through final editing and storage. Governance of production materials and intellectual property will follow jointly negotiated agreements specific to this evaluation phase.
This collaboration follows PAI’s successful deployment on other international projects, including animated content in China and various film and television productions spanning the United States, Europe, and Asia. DeNA, a Tokyo-based company established in 1999, operates across multiple sectors including mobile gaming and entertainment.
