A foul ball struck home plate umpire Jordan Baker’s mask during Tuesday night’s matchup between the San Francisco Giants and Cleveland Guardians in Cleveland. The incident occurred during an at-bat by Giants batter Andrew Knizner in the second inning. Despite the impact, Baker continued officiating through the fourth inning, receiving periodic evaluations from training staff.
Baker was removed from the game before the fifth inning began, prompting a 12-minute delay while adjustments were made to the umpiring crew. Third base umpire Rob Drake was reassigned to cover home plate for the remainder of the contest. To fill the gaps created by this repositioning, second base umpire Steven Jaschinski moved to third base, while first base umpire Stu Scheurwater remained in his original position, allowing the game to continue with a three-person crew.
The game ultimately proceeded without further incident following the personnel changes.
