President Donald Trump has threatened military action against Oman, a longtime US ally, should the Gulf nation interfere with American negotiations regarding Iran. During a Fox News interview, Trump stated that the US would attack Oman if it “gets in the way” of his administration’s diplomatic efforts with Tehran. The remarks came as tensions remain high following months of conflict between the US, Israel, and Iran.
The dispute centers on control of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping route that has been largely closed for nearly six months due to the ongoing conflict. Both the United States and Oman have been conducting separate negotiations with Iran to reopen the waterway, which handles approximately one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas trade. Oman, which borders the strait, has positioned itself as a neutral mediator in the dispute, though it has experienced military strikes from Iran.
Trump also claimed during the Fox interview that the US maintains a direct communication channel with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, a statement the IRGC has categorically denied. Meanwhile, Iran’s foreign ministry reported progress in talks with Oman regarding transit routes through the strait. The broader diplomatic situation remains uncertain following the expiration of a 60-day agreement between Washington and Tehran, with Trump indicating he does not intend to seek an extension.
