Oklahoma basketball faces uncertainty regarding one of its significant offseason acquisitions. Transfer guard B.J. Edwards’ playing status has become complicated following a recent court decision involving the NCAA and Tennessee’s appeals court system.
The Tennessee Court of Appeals granted the NCAA’s request to stay a temporary injunction that had previously cleared Edwards and 18 other players to compete with an additional year of eligibility. Edwards had received clearance under the “5 in 5” injunction in late July before committing to the Sooners in mid-August. His previous eligibility status, which seemed secured at that time, is now in question due to the court’s recent action.
Last season with SMU, Edwards contributed meaningfully to the Mustangs’ backcourt, recording averages of 12.7 points, 4.9 assists, and 5.9 rebounds per game. Oklahoma had anticipated utilizing him significantly in its guard rotation alongside established options like Xzayvier Brown and transfer Pop Isaacs.
The legal situation remains fluid as the case progresses through Tennessee’s court system. Edwards’ potential availability for the upcoming season now depends on how the eligibility dispute ultimately resolves, leaving the Sooners’ roster plans uncertain.
