Parallax Films, an international sales company specializing in Asian cinema, has acquired global distribution rights to “Aman,” a short film directed by Rahul Roye. The 16-minute production explores the story of a transgender man confronting an unexpected pregnancy shortly before undergoing gender-affirming surgery. The film represents a collaborative effort between production teams based in the United Kingdom, United States, India, and France, with dialogue in Hindi and Bengali.
The project is set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival’s Short Cuts competition, followed by a screening at the BFI London Film Festival, where it will compete among ten selected international shorts. Parallax founder Liuying Cao praised the film’s emotional depth and its ability to address profound personal experiences while engaging with broader social and political contexts. The production features Kabir Maan, a transgender activist, in his acting debut, alongside performers Sirat Taneja, Guntaj Deep Singh, and Satakshi Nandy.
Director Roye stated that “Aman” aims to challenge conventional understandings of gender by positioning pregnancy—traditionally viewed as a deeply gendered experience—at the center of the narrative. The film has received support from multiple arts foundations and represents Roye’s third short film project. Producer teams from four countries collaborated to bring this story to screen, reflecting the work’s international significance within contemporary queer cinema.
