Delaware mounted a spirited challenge against Vanderbilt on Saturday in Nashville, but ultimately fell short in a 35-26 defeat. The Blue Hens trailed early before staging a comeback that gave them a 17-14 halftime advantage, demonstrating their ability to compete against an SEC opponent. However, Vanderbilt regained control with a dominant third quarter featuring three touchdowns, including one on a blocked punt, to secure the victory.
Delaware quarterback Nick Minicucci dealt with an arm injury in the second quarter but returned for the second half to complete 11 of 27 passes for 182 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. Backup Braden Streeter performed admirably during his relief appearances, including guiding a touchdown drive that featured a key 33-yard completion. Running back Jo Silver led the ground attack with 109 yards on 16 carries, averaging 4.9 yards per attempt and providing crucial balance to the offense.
Vanderbilt’s defensive line proved formidable throughout the contest, recording six sacks for 49 lost yards and creating constant pressure on Delaware’s passing game. Wide receiver Da’Wain Lofton emerged as a bright spot for the Blue Hens, recording four catches for 141 yards in his first 100-yard performance. Linebacker Gavin Moul anchored Delaware’s defense with 10 tackles, while fellow linebacker Colin Gallagher added 2.5 tackles for loss.
Despite the loss, Delaware head coach Ryan Carty praised his team’s effort and competitive spirit against a superior opponent. The Blue Hens will look to bounce back as they prepare to host Coastal Carolina in their home opener next week.
