The arrival of the Utah Mammoth NHL franchise in 2024 served as a major catalyst for the city’s ascent. Beyond hockey, Salt Lake City has rapidly added the Utah Talons professional softball team, which captured back-to-back championships, and LOVB Salt Lake women’s volleyball. The U.S. Biathlon Association also relocated its headquarters to the region, strengthening Salt Lake City’s position as a winter sports hub ahead of the 2034 Winter Olympics.
Substantial investments in sports venues and infrastructure have further bolstered the city’s ranking. Major projects include a $525 million transformation of the Delta Center, a $140 million baseball stadium for the Triple-A Salt Lake Bees, and planned developments totaling over $6.6 billion in sports-related construction. These efforts position Salt Lake City above major metropolitan areas including Philadelphia, Chicago, and Denver on the competitive rankings.
The city’s ranking now surpasses Tampa, which faces ongoing stadium uncertainties with its baseball franchise.
