New England Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez returned to the practice field Monday after a two-week absence from training camp. The star defensive back sustained an injury during an August 10th session and missed significant practice time while the team prepared for the upcoming season. During Monday’s practice, Gonzalez participated fully in pads, demonstrating quick movement and comfort throughout both individual and team drills.
Gonzalez’s extended absence raised questions about whether the cornerback was holding out over contract negotiations. The All-Pro defender remains unsigned on a long-term extension despite the Patriots offering what ownership described as the largest deal in franchise history. Recently, Seattle cornerback Devon Witherspoon’s $132 million extension reset the market for elite defensive backs, leaving the two sides further apart in negotiations.
Despite the contract standoff and injury recovery, teammates praised Gonzalez’s professionalism and dedication. Safety Kevin Byard emphasized that the cornerback has remained focused on football rather than dwelling on the stalled negotiations. Linebacker Christian Elliss added that Gonzalez’s love for the game and desire to compete at the highest level have kept him engaged with the team throughout the uncertainty.
Head coach Mike Vrabel sidestepped questions about Gonzalez’s readiness for Week 1, focusing instead on daily practice improvements. The Patriots begin their season against the Seattle Seahawks on September 9 as they look to prepare all players for the regular season opener.
