Netflix’s latest thriller “The Whisper Man” marks the first film adaptation of British crime writer Steve Mosby’s work, published under the pseudonym Alex North. The streaming film follows a familiar procedural formula, centering on a serial killer case that draws parallels to crimes solved years earlier by a retired detective. Robert De Niro takes on the role of the former investigator, delivering a performance that requires minimal effort despite his seasoned presence.
The plot unfolds when a young boy disappears in a small New Jersey town, becoming the latest victim of a predator operating under the same methods as an imprisoned killer from decades past. Detective Amanda Beck, portrayed by Michelle Monaghan, enlists the help of De Niro’s character to solve the case. The investigation takes a personal turn when it’s revealed that Adam Scott’s character, a grieving widower and crime novelist, is the detective’s estranged son.
While the film competently entertains viewers for a couple of hours, it largely adheres to conventional crime-thriller tropes. The tension between father and son provides the script’s most interesting element, offering brief departures from an otherwise straightforward narrative. Supporting cast members including Scott and Michael Keaton add credibility to an otherwise routine procedural that demands little from its audience or its leading actor.
