After a four-year hiatus, The War on Drugs have announced their return with “Who’s That,” marking the band’s first new material since 2022. The track showcases the group’s signature sound, featuring layered instrumentation and introspective vocals from frontman Adam Granduciel. The song was largely crafted by Granduciel at his Burbank studio, incorporating multiple guitar styles, vintage synthesizers, and contributions from bandmates and guest musicians including members of Spoon.
Granduciel penned “Who’s That” in just ten minutes during a morning routine in Los Angeles, drawing inspiration from his daily life. The composition addresses themes of self-acceptance and emotional struggle, with lyrics exploring anxiety, depression, and existential questioning set against a grand musical backdrop. In a statement, Granduciel emphasized the song’s focus on loving oneself despite internal obstacles that may hinder personal fulfillment.
The release hints at larger developments ahead. Granduciel recently revealed to Guitar.com that he is nearly finished with a full-length record, describing the project as a return to the band’s earlier sonic approach. The group will support the new material with an extensive fall tour schedule, including performances at major festivals across the country from September through October.
