The Professional Women’s Hockey League announced Friday that a replica of the Walter Cup championship trophy has gone missing during shipping to Alberta. The league stated the trophy “did not arrive as expected” at its intended destination and confirmed they are working with the shipping company to locate it.
The Walter Cup was en route to Lethbridge, Alberta, where it was scheduled to spend a day with Montreal Victoire forward Dara Greig. The shipping container arrived at its destination, but the trophy was not inside, forcing the cancellation of a public event planned at a local arena. It remains unclear where the trophy was last seen during transit.
Unlike the National Hockey League’s Stanley Cup, which has a dedicated handler who travels with the trophy, the PWHL does not employ a similar position for the Walter Cup. The missing version is a replica made of sterling silver by Tiffany & Co., weighing approximately 35 pounds and standing about 24 inches tall. The original championship trophy remains permanently housed at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.
Montreal won the inaugural Walter Cup in May by defeating Ottawa in the championship series, becoming the first Canadian team to claim the title. The trophy is named after PWHL founder Mark Walter, owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, and his wife Kimbra.
