Malta’s Foreign Minister Chris Fearne has called for a more unified and coordinated European strategy to address the escalating challenges facing the Mediterranean region. Rather than viewing the waterway as a dividing line between wealthier European nations and less developed African countries, Fearne argues it should be understood as a vital connection linking the two continents together.
In his remarks, Fearne emphasized that solving migration issues requires European policymakers to expand their perspective beyond traditional continental boundaries. He stressed the importance of developing comprehensive solutions that account for the complex circumstances affecting populations across the Mediterranean basin.
Beyond migration concerns, the Maltese minister outlined his government’s positions on several international matters. Malta supports a two-state resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, continued backing for Ukraine amid ongoing regional tensions, and diplomatic initiatives aimed at reconciling Libya’s competing political factions to facilitate democratic elections and national reconstruction.
Fearne also expressed concern about the current global security landscape, noting that international institutions and frameworks are not consistently upheld worldwide. His comments reflect growing anxieties about geopolitical stability and the effectiveness of established international legal standards.
