Searchlight Pictures has officially greenlit a sequel to the beloved 2005 holiday film The Family Stone, titled The Families Stone. The new installment will reunite most of the original cast members, including Rachel McAdams, Claire Danes, Sarah Jessica Parker, Dermot Mulroney, Craig T. Nelson, Luke Wilson, Elizabeth Reaser, and Paul Schneider, who will all reprise their roles from the original film.
Set two decades after the events of the first movie, The Families Stone follows the Stone family as they gather for Christmas following their mother’s death. The storyline takes an unexpected turn when their father arrives with a new romantic interest he wishes to introduce to the family. Writer-director Thomas Bezucha, who helmed the original feature, returns to oversee both the writing and direction of the sequel.
The announcement comes approximately one year after the passing of original cast member Diane Keaton, who played the family matriarch. Bezucha previously shared that he had been developing the sequel concept and found the timing particularly meaningful given the loss of Keaton. Cast member Luke Wilson confirmed earlier this year that the script had impressed him with its humor and warmth, noting the significance of the ensemble’s willingness to reunite for the project.
