Cameron Grady, a senior running back for Sotomayor High School, made his season debut Thursday night despite facing legal charges. The 17-year-old athlete was arrested in July on two counts of aggravated robbery and booked into Bexar County Jail before posting a $100,000 bond days later.
According to Northside ISD’s athletic director Conrad Hernandez, Thursday’s matchup against Smithson Valley marked the first game this season where Grady was eligible to participate. The standout back did not play in Sotomayor’s opening game against Clark the previous week, though he was able to leave that contest under his own power after a fourth-quarter injury.
Recent court developments have worked in Grady’s favor. A judge approved the removal of his electronic monitoring device on Wednesday, and he had previously been granted permission to attend practices and games in July. Grady is a verbal commitment to UTSA, having chosen the Roadrunners over multiple Division I offers in June.
As a junior last year, Grady accumulated 895 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns on 77 carries despite missing time due to injury. During his sophomore season, he led Sotomayor with 1,435 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns across 174 carries, averaging nearly 120 yards per game.
