The Blue Devils trailed 17-14 at intermission but outscored their opponents 21-0 after halftime to claim a 35-25 Big North Conference victory, marking their first league win of the season.
The first half proved challenging for Gaylord’s young roster, as penalties and turnovers hampered their offensive rhythm. Junior quarterback Calvin Cosby threw two interceptions that led directly to Escanaba touchdowns, while two promising scoring drives were negated by holding penalties. Despite these setbacks, Cosby bounced back in the second half with two touchdown passes while demonstrating poise in his second varsity start.
Gaylord’s coaching staff made critical adjustments during halftime that unlocked their ground game in the second half. Improved offensive line execution allowed Blake Green to score twice on rushing plays, while MJ Letourneau added an insurance touchdown late in the game. Head coach Matt Silsbury attributed the turnaround to refined game planning and execution of the fundamentals that had eluded them through the first six quarters of the season.
