The Los Angeles Dodgers are hoping to welcome back star player Shohei Ohtani to their lineup imminently after he sat out his fourth consecutive game during Sunday’s matchup against the Washington Nationals. Manager Dave Roberts expressed cautious optimism about Ohtani’s potential return, indicating that the two-time MVP could be ready to resume his designated hitter duties when the team opens a series against Cincinnati on Monday.
Ohtani has dealt with multiple ailments throughout the latter part of the season, including left knee pain and right bicep soreness that has sidelined him from pitching since early July. A bout of neck soreness prompted Roberts to rest the versatile player after a difficult performance on Wednesday in which he went hitless and struck out four times. However, Ohtani’s participation in batting cage work on Saturday appeared to go smoothly, with Roberts noting that the player felt good following the session and exhibited no complications during his regular pregame preparations.
Separately, catcher Dalton Rushing has been placed back on the injured list after experiencing renewed elbow pain while throwing. The 25-year-old had recently returned from a partially torn UCL but will now be shut down from catching duties for the remainder of the season. Meanwhile, closer Edwin Díaz continues his rehabilitation from a neck injury, completing a scoreless inning in his initial rehab outing with Triple-A Oklahoma City.
