A forthcoming documentary celebrates the legacy of Neil Peart, the late drummer of progressive rock band Rush. Titled “Neil Peart: No One’s Disciple,” the film will debut at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 16. The project is produced by the CBC and directed by Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn, filmmakers known for their work on previous Rush documentaries and music films.
The documentary features Rush bandmates Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson alongside prominent drummers and musicians who cite Peart as an influence. Notable contributors include Stewart Copeland of The Police, Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Danny Carey of Tool, and Gavin Harrison of Porcupine Tree. The film includes both jam sessions and personal reflections on Peart’s technical mastery and impact on the music industry.
Peart’s death in January 2020 initially prevented a timely tribute, as noted by band members in the film’s trailer. Rush had ceased touring years earlier when Peart retired in December 2015. The band has since resumed performances with new drummer Anika Nilles, with Lee emphasizing their commitment to maintaining the high standards Peart exemplified throughout his career.
