The Sarajevo Film Festival will take place from August 14-21, marking the 32nd edition of Southeast Europe’s premier cinematic event. Festival director Jovan Marjanović described the upcoming showcase as a blend of retrospection and innovation, emphasizing that 2026 has been an exceptional year for international filmmaking. Marjanović highlighted the festival’s significance as a vital platform for cinema emerging from the region.
The festival opens with “Fatherland,” an Oscar-winning period drama from Polish director Paweł Pawlikowski that premiered at Cannes, while closing with a 25th-anniversary screening of Danis Tanović’s acclaimed war satire “No Man’s Land.” The program includes 21 world premieres alongside numerous international and regional premieres, featuring over 50 films from Southeast Europe across various competition sections. Notable selections include Cristian Mungiu’s Palme d’Or winner “Fjord” and works by emerging regional filmmakers who have gained recognition at major international festivals.
The event will honor several acclaimed artists with Honorary Heart of Sarajevo awards, including two-time Oscar nominee Emily Watson, who will chair the main competition jury, as well as Woody Harrelson, Diego Luna, and Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi. The festival continues its tradition of showcasing regional talent while attracting international cinema figures to the Bosnian capital.
Founded during the Sarajevo siege in the 1990s, the festival has evolved into a major industry event. Marjanović emphasized the festival’s independence and pioneering spirit, stating it has always reflected the region’s determination to create opportunities rather than await external validation.
