The San Sebastián Film Festival has announced six additional films competing for the Golden Shell award at its upcoming 74th edition. The selections include directorial efforts from established filmmakers Jesse Eisenberg, Fred Cavayé, Amanda Kernell, and Gabriel Martins, along with feature debuts from Ah Biao and Tony Vahl. These titles expand the competition lineup to sixteen films total, with the festival set to take place September 18-26.
Among the new entries, Eisenberg’s “The Debut” features Julianne Moore as a reserved homemaker whose involvement in community theater sparks an intense commitment to method acting. The filmmaker directed, wrote, and produced the project while also composing its original score and appearing in the cast. Cavayé brings a fresh interpretation of Victor Hugo’s “Les Misérables” to the festival, with an ensemble cast including Vincent Lindon and Tahar Rahim exploring Jean Valjean’s redemption arc following his imprisonment.
Kernell’s “Brace Your Heart” centers on a woman working to maintain her inherited reindeer herd amid personal conflict, while Martins examines grief and accountability through a narrative about a mother seeking out families affected by her son’s fatal accident. The debut selections showcase diverse storytelling, with Ah Biao’s “Border” depicting a struggling miner’s descent into criminal activity in an isolated frontier setting, and Tony Vahl’s “Krux” depicting village life during World War II’s final days.
