The Detroit Lions plan to deploy all three running backs on their roster in their season opener against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, September 13. Head coach Dan Campbell indicated that Jahmyr Gibbs will shoulder the primary offensive load, while Jacob Saylors and Sione Vaki will share backup duties in a rotation format rather than establishing a clear second-string option.
Vaki, who transitioned from a safety position in college, missed preseason action due to various injuries including a broken nose and back spasms. Despite limited game experience during the exhibition season, he accumulated significant practice reps following Isiah Pacheco’s back injury. Campbell praised Vaki’s development as a runner and pass protector while emphasizing his continued value in the Lions’ special teams unit.
Saylors impressed during preseason, rushing for 100 yards in the final exhibition game against Indianapolis. Campbell previously stated he felt comfortable deploying Saylors as Gibbs’ primary backup with Pacheco sidelined. However, the coach’s recent comments suggest the team will use both backup options interchangeably, allowing each player to contribute in different game situations.
The Lions currently have two open roster spots and are considering practice squad promotions to address depth concerns at receiver and on the offensive line. Campbell indicated the team has identified its preferred approach for Week 1 while remaining flexible as circumstances develop.
