World Athletics President Sebastian Coe has committed to personally defending his organization’s disciplinary measures against Russian athletics in court proceedings. Russia’s athletics federation has initiated a legal challenge at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, seeking to overturn sanctions that World Athletics has maintained since March 2022 following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Russian Athletics contends that the restrictions are discriminatory and politically motivated, arguing they violate the organization’s rights and hinder its ability to represent its athletes internationally. The global athletics body announced in July that it would uphold the ban on Russian and Belarusian competitors, emphasizing its commitment to competition integrity rather than political considerations.
Coe’s approach contrasts sharply with other Olympic sports federations. World Gymnastics and the International Skating Union have relaxed their restrictions on Russian athletes, while the International Olympic Committee has permitted Russian competitors to participate in certain events at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Coe has indicated that World Athletics will maintain its current position, stating the organization’s primary concern is preserving competitive fairness. He added that should a peace settlement emerge, the sport would not obstruct Russia’s eventual return to international competition.
Ukraine has criticized the IOC’s decision to allow Russian participation as premature and unjustified given the ongoing conflict. World Athletics established a support fund for Ukrainian athletes in 2022, acknowledging the severe challenges they face in training and competing.
