Grammy-nominated Latin music artist Romeo Santos has initiated legal proceedings against his former accounting and business management firm, seeking over $2.3 million in damages. The lawsuit, filed in Miami federal court, names Morrison Brown Argiz & Farra LLP, now operating as BDO, as the defendant in the malpractice case.
According to Santos’ complaint, the firm committed multiple errors in handling his financial affairs. The 45-year-old performer alleges that tax documents filed on his behalf were fundamentally flawed, particularly a 2021 return that incorrectly classified his New York residency status, ultimately triggering a state audit. Santos characterizes the filing as “incoherent,” claiming it simultaneously omitted required income while falsely reporting earnings without supporting documentation.
Beyond tax-related issues, Santos contends the accounting firm mismanaged his cash reserves by allowing substantial funds to remain in low-yield checking accounts. He also claims the firm purchased redundant workers’ compensation insurance and maintained an unnecessary expensive health plan despite his eligibility for more affordable SAG-AFTRA coverage. Additionally, the firm allegedly failed to establish his retirement account and made unauthorized withdrawals following their professional relationship’s termination.
The Bronx-born artist is demanding a jury trial, with damages to be determined at trial but specified at no less than $2.3 million. His legal representation from Pryor Cashman firm cites professional negligence causing tax penalties, investigative fees, and losses from mismanaged accounts. BDO has not yet responded to requests for comment.
