Courtney Love has shared a deeply personal tribute to Jennifer Finch, the bassist of influential punk-metal band L7, who passed away in July at age 59 following a brain cancer diagnosis. In an emotional essay, Love reflected on their decades-long friendship that began in the early 1980s when both were struggling musicians in Los Angeles.
The two artists first connected through their early musical collaboration in Sugar Babydoll before their respective careers with Hole and L7 took off. Love credited Finch with providing her unwavering support and stability during pivotal moments in her life, including the tragic death of her husband Kurt Cobain in 1994. She described Finch’s home as a sanctuary that offered her safety and acceptance during her formative years, a gift she said proved invaluable given her difficult upbringing.
In her tribute, Love emphasized Finch’s exceptional character and commitment to sobriety, noting that the L7 bassist maintained 37 years of continuous sobriety while establishing herself as a pivotal force in the band’s sound and success. Love also acknowledged Finch’s role in connecting her with musician Pat Smear, a collaboration that ultimately influenced the formation of Hole. Love spent her final weeks with Finch, ensuring she received compassionate end-of-life care until her death on July 18.
Finch’s memoir, “Shooting Up and Making Out: A Memoir of My Life in LA and L7,” co-written with Jeff Alulis, is scheduled for release in January.
