South Korean filmmaker Lee Chang-dong made a triumphant return to the Venice Film Festival after a 24-year absence, receiving widespread acclaim for his latest romantic drama “Possible Love.” The director’s comeback screening resulted in an impressive six-minute standing ovation from the audience at the Sala Grande theater, marking a significant moment in the director’s career.
The film, co-written by Oh Jung-mi, explores the intersection of two married couples whose lives converge following a funeral. Lee reunited with several accomplished actors for the project, including Jeon Do-yeon, Sul Kyung-gu, Zo In-sung, and Cho Yeo-jeong. During the screening’s conclusion, the emotional cast members were visibly moved by the audience’s enthusiastic reception, embracing one another and wiping away tears as applause continued.
This marks Lee’s first feature film in eight years and his return to Venice competition since winning the Silver Lion for “Oasis” in 2002. The director previously explained his extended gap between projects, noting that he requires certainty about a film’s significance before beginning work. “Possible Love” will have additional festival appearances at Toronto and New York before its theatrical release in the United States on October 23, followed by a global streaming debut on November 6.
