Pioneer High School’s volleyball team made history Tuesday by hosting its first varsity match at Pioneer Elementary School. The Panthers defeated Argos in a dominant 3-0 performance, showcasing the program’s competitive strength despite challenging circumstances.
The unconventional venue became necessary after the junior/senior high school facility sustained significant flood damage two weeks prior. The elementary gym, which once hosted Royal Center Bulldogs basketball games decades ago, provided a functional but less-than-ideal setting for the match. Senior setter Lois Layer noted the heat in the older facility, though she appreciated its wooden floor. The tight quarters have also complicated team preparations, with limited court space forcing 24 high school players to share a single net during practice sessions.
Coach Rod Nies emphasized that the current setup restricts the team’s ability to conduct focused skill development, particularly for separating varsity and junior varsity squads. The program hopes to return to its proper home court by early September, pending completion of cleanup and restoration efforts underway at the main facility.
Pioneer currently holds a 5-2 overall record and 1-0 conference mark. The Panthers, who pioneered women’s volleyball at the state level by winning a sectional title in the inaugural 1972 season, continue their temporary home schedule Thursday against Caston. Layer expressed optimism about the team’s potential despite the disruptions.
