Roger Waters, the legendary Pink Floyd co-founder, has joined a new documentary project as executive producer. The film, titled “Freedom Theatre,” marks the directorial debut of filmmaker Rishi Pelham and examines the intersection of art and activism in Palestine. The documentary centers on Ahmed Tobasi, a former resistance fighter turned artist, and his efforts to preserve a theater operating within the Jenin refugee camp.
Pelham described the project as an “immersive and sensory character study” that explores the tension between the controlled environment of a theater’s rehearsal space and the volatile conditions of the surrounding camp. The filmmaker shot the documentary over five years while working with Palestinian musicians, including techno producer Sama’ Abdulhadi, who contributed to the film’s original score. The production is currently in post-production stages.
Waters brings significant influence to the project, having recently joined hundreds of artists in calling for the Venice Film Festival to support Palestinian causes. The documentary team plans to pursue a festival circuit strategy, with Venice serving as a key venue for meetings with potential distribution partners and collaborators.
