Phyllida Law, the acclaimed Scottish performer and mother of award-winning actresses Emma and Sophie Thompson, has passed away at the age of 94. Her manager confirmed that Law died peacefully at her home on July 27th, surrounded by family members. The manager expressed deep sadness over her death, noting their professional relationship had spanned more than five decades and describing Law as a remarkable individual.
Law was born in Glasgow in 1932 and trained at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School before launching a distinguished acting career. She notably appeared in several film and television productions alongside her daughters, including the Jane Austen adaptation “Emma,” Kenneth Branagh’s “Much Ado About Nothing” and “Peter’s Friends,” and Alan Rickman’s directorial effort “The Winter Guest.” Her theatrical work also included performances in West End productions, such as “La Cage Aux Folles” at the London Palladium.
In recognition of her contributions to the entertainment industry and charitable causes, Law received an OBE in 2014. She was married to actor Eric Thompson, who co-created the beloved children’s television program “The Magic Roundabout,” until his death in 1982 from a heart attack at age 53. Law is survived by her two daughters and three grandchildren.
