Amazon has officially ordered a television series adaptation of Benjamin Stevenson’s mystery novel “Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone,” with actor Penn Badgley taking on the lead role. David Hemingson, an Academy Award nominee known for his work on “The Holdovers” and “Kitchen Confidential,” will adapt the source material and serve as showrunner and executive producer for the project.
The darkly comedic series is set in Vermont’s remote Northeast Kingdom and centers on Ern Cunningham, a mystery writer who attends a family reunion to greet his brother Michael upon his release from prison—a brother Ern himself helped convict years earlier. When a frozen body surfaces and a blizzard isolates the family indoors, murders begin occurring. The premise reveals that every member of Ern’s family has killed someone at some point, whether intentionally or accidentally.
Badgley, who spent five seasons portraying serial killer Joe Goldberg on Netflix’s “You,” brings significant experience with murder-centered narratives to the role. Production companies Made Up Stories and Fifth Season will co-produce alongside Amazon MGM Studios. The novel was previously in development as a limited series at HBO in 2022 but did not advance to production at that time.
Stevenson’s book is the first in the Ernest Cunningham mystery series, with three sequels already published and a fifth installment currently in development by the author.
