Hungary has officially selected “Silent Friend,” directed by Ildikó Enyedi, as its submission for the best international feature film category at the 2027 Academy Awards. The film marks another significant entry from Enyedi, whose previous work “On Body and Soul” earned an Oscar nomination in the same category following its Golden Bear win at the Berlin Film Festival in 2018.
“Silent Friend” features an international cast including Tony Leung Chiu-Wai, Luna Wedler, Enzo Brumm, and Léa Seydoux. The film presents a contemplative examination of connections between humanity, nature, and the passage of time. It has already garnered substantial recognition, including six awards at the 82nd Venice Film Festival and a nomination for the FIPRESCI Grand Prix, which honors exceptional achievements in cinema.
The production is a multilateral collaboration involving Germany’s Pandora Film, Hungary’s Inforg-M&M Film, France’s Galathée Films, and China’s Rediance Films. Earlier this year, the film received top honors at Budapest’s 45th Hungarian Film Week, with its cinematographer, editor, and producer also receiving individual accolades. The Academy will announce the international feature shortlist on December 15, with final nominations following on January 21. The 99th Academy Awards ceremony takes place on March 14 in Los Angeles.
