Miami-Dade County officials have proposed transforming portions of the city into a promotional landscape for Grand Theft Auto VI, capitalizing on the game’s fictional Vice City setting, which draws inspiration from Miami. In late June, county representatives submitted a presentation to Rockstar Games outlining potential partnerships, including Vice City branding at Miami International Airport and the Metromover transit system, as well as a themed radio exhibit at the downtown Main Library. The mayor’s office confirmed preliminary discussions with the gaming company, though no formal agreements have been reached.
Law enforcement has strongly opposed the initiative. Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz voiced concerns that the marketing effort sends the wrong message, particularly given that the franchise centers on criminal activities that her department works daily to prevent. Commissioner Juan Carlos Bermudez echoed these objections, expressing disbelief that county assets like the airport would be temporarily rebranded for commercial purposes.
Support for the proposal remains divided among local officials. Commissioner Damian Pardo of the City of Miami has introduced an ordinance that would grant Rockstar special advertising waivers for temporary promotional materials. Under his proposal, revenues generated from these waivers would fund development of a 33-acre green space project. The competing visions reflect broader questions about how cities should balance economic opportunities with community values and law enforcement concerns.
