John Pica’s path to South Dakota State football has been unconventional but ultimately rewarding. The offensive lineman spent two successful seasons at Dakota Wesleyan University, an NAIA program, where he earned all-conference honors twice, including a first-team selection in 2024. After completing his time with the Tigers, Pica decided to pursue an opportunity to compete at a higher level of college football and made the move to the Jackrabbits.
Since arriving at SDSU prior to spring practice in 2025, Pica has impressed coaching staff and teammates alike with his work ethic and commitment to the program. Head coach Dan Jackson praised Pica’s leadership qualities and dedication, noting that he has earned respect throughout the locker room despite joining from a lower division. Pica has demonstrated his versatility by competing at multiple positions, including a stint as a blocking tight end where he caught a two-point conversion during last season’s playoff game against Montana.
The Dell Rapids St. Mary product has become a mentor to younger offensive linemen on the roster, continuing a tradition of support he received when joining the program. Team captain Quinten Christensen, who invited Pica to live in his home, credited him with maintaining a consistent growth mindset and always seeking improvement. Pica’s transition to SDSU represents one of 13 roster additions from programs below the FCS level and he remains the only NAIA transfer on this year’s squad.
Entering the 2026 season, Pica competes for the starting right tackle position, bringing proven reliability and adaptability to the Jackrabbits’ offensive line. Jackson emphasized that transfers from any level must demonstrate confidence while understanding the work required to succeed at their new institution.
