The New York Times has released a sports-themed version of its popular word puzzle game, Connections: Sports Edition, developed in partnership with The Athletic. Today’s puzzle, #703, may prove particularly accessible to University of Texas-Austin enthusiasts. Like the original game, players must identify common threads linking sets of four words from a board of 16 total options.
The sports variant maintains the core gameplay mechanics of its predecessor. Players arrange words into four distinct categories, with each correct grouping removing those terms from the board. The difficulty progression follows a color-coded system, starting with yellow for easier connections and advancing through green, blue, and purple levels. Participants have up to four incorrect attempts before the game concludes, and they can shuffle the board layout to aid their solving process.
Today’s puzzle categories center on transgression-related terms, player transaction vocabulary, references to the Dallas Cowboys organization, and phrases that precede the word “era” in sports contexts. The complete solutions include synonyms for rule violations, terms describing player exchanges, names associated with the football franchise, and period descriptors spanning baseball history through performance-enhancing drug controversies.
Like its predecessor Wordle, Connections: Sports Edition resets daily with increasingly challenging word sets. Results can be shared across social media platforms, and a new puzzle will be available tomorrow for continued play.
