Connections: Sports Edition operates similarly to the original game, presenting 16 words divided into four categories of varying difficulty. Players must correctly match all four words in a category to advance, with each incorrect guess counting toward a maximum of four allowed mistakes. The color-coded difficulty system ranges from yellow as easiest to purple as most challenging. Like other New York Times games, a fresh puzzle appears daily after midnight.
For August 22, 2026’s puzzle, knowledge of professional football proves particularly useful. The four categories include synonyms for “important,” equipment used by football officials, Major League Soccer teams based in California, and college football bowl games with altered first letters. The solutions are: Important (Indispensable, Key, Pivotal, Vital); Referee Accessories (Bean Bag, Coin, Flag, Whistle); California Soccer Teams (Bay, Earthquakes, Galaxy, Wave); and Modified Bowl Games (Beach, Grange, Hose, Siesta).
