The New York Times has released a sports-themed version of its popular word puzzle game in partnership with The Athletic. Today’s installment, puzzle #695, challenges players to identify connections between 16 words organized into four distinct categories, each color-coded by difficulty level.
The game mechanics remain similar to the original Connections experience. Players must group words that share a common theme, with yellow representing the easiest category and purple the most challenging. A successful match removes all four words from the board, while incorrect guesses count against a player’s limit of four mistakes. The daily puzzle resets after midnight and grows progressively more difficult.
Today’s categories span various sports topics, including professional teams based in Tennessee, colloquial nicknames for Southeastern Conference universities, first names of Dallas Wings athletes, and references tied to Italian soccer culture. Knowledge of international sports, particularly soccer, could provide an advantage in solving this edition.
Like its predecessor, the sports edition allows players to shuffle the board layout for easier pattern recognition and share results on social media. New puzzles release daily, offering sports enthusiasts an engaging way to test their knowledge while enjoying the strategic challenge of the word game format.
