The New York Times has released a sports-themed version of its popular word puzzle game in partnership with The Athletic. Today’s edition, puzzle #693, features a baseball-related challenge that may appeal particularly to fans of the sport.
In this variant of Connections, players must identify common themes linking groups of four words from a board of 16 total words. The game is accessible on both web and mobile platforms. Each correct grouping removes those words from play, while incorrect guesses count against a limit of four mistakes. The four categories are color-coded by difficulty level, with yellow being the easiest and purple the most challenging.
Today’s puzzle categories include words associated with coin tosses, synonyms for determination, basketball pass types, and notable Hall of Fame players from the Oakland Raiders franchise. The solutions are defer, heads, receive, and tails for the first group; dogged, driven, intent, and tenacious for the second; bounce, chest, outlet, and pocket for the third; and branch, casper, guy, and shell for the fourth.
Like the original Connections game and Wordle, the sports edition resets daily with new puzzles, allowing players to challenge themselves regularly while sharing results with others on social media.
