Nvidia is expanding the compatibility of its DLSS 5 AI rendering technology beyond its original plan. The technology will now officially support older RTX 40-series graphics cards in addition to the newly launched RTX 50 series, according to an Nvidia spokesperson. The company stated it would focus on optimizing performance for RTX 50 GPUs first, with plans to extend support to RTX 40-series hardware later this fall.
The announcement comes after modders successfully ported a leaked version of DLSS 5 to run on a broader range of hardware. Despite this unofficial workaround demonstrating the technology’s potential reach, Nvidia has not confirmed plans to support even older RTX 30 and RTX 20-series GPUs, stating that current efforts remain concentrated on the newest generation.
However, Nvidia is maintaining restrictions on user control over DLSS 5 settings. While modders have demonstrated the ability to adjust various parameters, the company confirmed that gamers will only have a simple on-or-off toggle. More granular controls, including options for model selection and intensity adjustments, will remain exclusively available to game developers. The company noted that individual developers could potentially offer additional controls through their own in-game settings menus if they choose to do so.
