Reiner’s attorney argued Monday that time is essential, as the defendant seeks to tap approximately $1.5 million in trust assets to retain private counsel for the double homicide case involving his parents, Rob and Michele Reiner. Currently incarcerated without bail in Los Angeles County, Reiner is represented by a public defender while facing charges that could result in either life imprisonment or capital punishment.
The probate attorney emphasized the urgency of the matter, noting repeated delays in the process and the pressing need for adequate preparation time before trial. Judge Ruben Garcia acknowledged the complexity of such proceedings while committing to move the process forward. The next hearing is scheduled for October 23.
The trustee overseeing Reiner’s inheritance has limited previous payouts but has resisted authorizing larger withdrawals, citing California’s “slayer statute,” which would bar Reiner from benefiting from his parents’ estate if convicted of their murders. Additionally, Reiner’s siblings have stakes in the trust, requiring their involvement in any settlement. Reiner pleaded not guilty to charges alleging special circumstances of lying in wait and multiple murders in connection with the stabbing deaths discovered in December in their Brentwood home.
