Netflix has greenlit a new adaptation of the classic western “Lonesome Dove,” tapping showrunners Zoe Kazan and Jeb Stuart to helm the project. The decision marks a fresh interpretation of Larry McMurtry’s Pulitzer Prize-winning 1985 novel, which previously spawned a critically acclaimed CBS miniseries in 1989 featuring Robert Duvall that won both Emmy and Golden Globe awards.
Kazan and Stuart, who are also working together on Netflix’s forthcoming “East of Eden” limited series, will serve as co-showrunners, writers, and executive producers on the western drama. The new take will follow protagonists Gus McCrae and Woodrow Call as they embark on a final cattle drive from Texas to Montana, navigating themes of friendship, frontier justice, and the pursuit of meaning in an untamed landscape. The production is backed by Teton Ridge Entertainment, which acquired the rights to McMurtry’s work and plans to develop the entire tetralogy of novels for television.
The original 1989 CBS miniseries proved to be a major success, attracting 26 million viewers and spawning multiple sequels and a syndicated series throughout the 1990s. Netflix’s head of scripted series praised the new showrunners’ ability to deliver emotional depth and expansive storytelling, expressing confidence that their vision will do justice to the legendary material for contemporary audiences.
