Comedian John Mulaney is in talks to headline Warner Bros.’ forthcoming reimagining of the classic spy comedy “Get Smart,” according to reports. The acclaimed performer would take on the iconic role of Agent Maxwell Smart, the bumbling but brilliant secret agent at the heart of the original television series. Though the project remains in preliminary stages of development, the studio has already assembled key creative talent to bring the concept to life.
Screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith, who recently worked on “Now You See Me: Now You Don’t,” has been tapped to develop the script. Andrew Lazar and Chuck Roven will serve as producers on the film adaptation. The project builds on the legacy of the beloved 1960s sitcom created by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry, which originally ran for five seasons and became a cultural phenomenon, earning multiple Emmy Awards during its television run.
A prior film version was released in 2008, featuring Steve Carell in the lead role alongside an ensemble cast including Anne Hathaway and Dwayne Johnson. That adaptation achieved commercial success, generating $230 million globally. Mulaney, a four-time Emmy winner, has recently appeared in Netflix’s “Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney” and has an upcoming film role in David O. Russell’s sports biopic “Madden.”
