Louis Messina, the prominent promoter behind Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour and other major artist tours, has filed a formal objection with a federal judge regarding a proposed settlement in the Live Nation and Ticketmaster antitrust case. In his submission, Messina argued that the consent decree under consideration would fail to address serious competitive issues within the music industry and could potentially worsen existing problems.
Despite his success managing stadium tours for major artists including Kenny Chesney, George Strait, and Ed Sheeran, Messina expressed concerns that Live Nation’s market dominance threatens independent promoters. He alleges that Live Nation ceased communication with his company in 2024 and deliberately excluded him from accessing their venues, which prevented him from working with several clients including the Lumineers and Shawn Mendes.
Messina contends that Live Nation’s business model relies heavily on ticketing fees, generating nearly a billion dollars annually through that revenue stream. This allows the company to offer artist guarantees that independent competitors cannot match, effectively pricing smaller promoters out of the market. Messina stated that this dynamic has already forced numerous independent promoters out of business.
The case has produced mixed outcomes for both sides this year. A jury found Live Nation liable on some original antitrust claims, while the proposed settlement would allow the company to remain intact. Several states have declined to support the agreement, citing similar competitive concerns.
