A prominent Netflix comedy executive is making a significant career move to Amazon. Andy Weil, who spent over a decade developing comedies at Netflix, will become head of comedy at Amazon MGM Studios, effective September 14th. His new role places him under Peter Friedlander, who previously supervised Weil during his tenure at Netflix and now leads global television operations at Amazon MGM Studios.
Throughout his 11 years at Netflix, Weil established himself as a respected developer of acclaimed comedy series. His track record includes championing popular shows such as “Master of None,” “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” “Bojack Horseman,” and the Emmy-winning anthology series “Black Mirror.” He also worked on more recent Netflix projects including “Nobody Wants This,” “A Man on the Inside,” and “Girls5eva.”
Friedlander praised Weil’s appointment in an internal memo, highlighting his creative sensibilities and extensive connections within the comedy industry. Before joining Netflix, Weil held the position of vice president of comedy development at Universal Television. His earlier career included a role as head of scripted television at BermanBraun, where he contributed to series development for projects like “Alpha” and “The Cape.”
