Neil Young and the Chrome Hearts are preparing to release their upcoming album “Second Song” on September 18. The project features a title track that showcases Young’s reflective songwriting style, with the acoustic composition extending beyond eleven minutes. The track explores themes of human connection and the effects of aging, highlighting Young’s continued focus on introspective material.
The album contains seven tracks in total, with five newly written compositions and two selections drawn from Young’s archival past. The two older songs, “I’ll Love You Forever” and “Casting Me Away From You,” originate from the mid-1960s Canadian music scene when Young was still developing his craft as a teenager. According to Young, the juxtaposition between these vintage recordings and the contemporary pieces creates a meaningful artistic dialogue throughout the album.
Young and his band recorded the new material at Rick Rubin’s Malibu studios with producer Lou Adler. The recording sessions proved efficient, with all five new compositions completed within a two-day window. The collaboration marks the second album from this lineup, following their 2025 release “Talkin’ to the Trees,” and represents Young’s continued creative output featuring guitarist Micah Nelson, organist Spooner Oldham, drummer Anthony LoGergo, and bassist Cory McCormick.
