The Sarajevo Film Festival is honoring the artistic contributions of Hungarian filmmaker Béla Tarr through a newly established tribute program. The initiative celebrates Tarr’s influence on cinema following his death this year. The program specifically highlights the achievements of former students from the Film Factory in Sarajevo, an educational institution that Tarr founded in 2013.
The curated selection showcases five films directed by alumni of the Film Factory, each gaining recognition at prestigious international venues. The lineup features Valdimar Jóhansson’s “Lamb,” which earned the Prize of Originality at Cannes Film Festival, alongside Bianca Lucas’s “Love Dog,” which received special mention for best first feature at Locarno Film Festival. Pilar Palomero’s “Motherhood” also appears in the program, having won best leading performance honors at San Sebastián Film Festival.
Festival director Jovan Marjanović noted that the selected works demonstrate how Tarr’s educational philosophy emphasized artistic individuality rather than conformity to a single style. The filmmakers represented in the program have gone on to participate in competitions at major festivals worldwide, including Rotterdam and Clermont-Ferrand. Together, their diverse bodies of work reflect Tarr’s commitment to nurturing distinctive creative voices within the next generation of cinema.
