The San Sebastián Film Festival will bestow its prestigious Donostia Award upon British actress Naomi Watts during the festival’s 74th edition this September. Watts joins renowned German filmmaker Werner Herzog as recipients of the honor, which recognizes outstanding contributions to cinema. The actress will accept her award on September 19 and participate in a special screening of “The Housewife,” a debut feature directed by Canadian filmmaker Ben Shirinian.
Festival organizers praised Watts as one of her generation’s most accomplished and versatile performers, noting her ability to seamlessly transition between independent productions and major studio films across television and motion pictures. Her breakout role in David Lynch’s “Mulholland Drive” earned particular recognition from the festival, which cited her performance as among the finest in modern cinema. Watts has garnered multiple Academy Award nominations throughout her career and recently earned an Emmy nomination for her role in Ryan Murphy’s “Feud: Capote vs. The Swans.”
“The Housewife,” set in 1964, follows a young journalist who uncovers a potential Nazi war criminal living in New York and develops a friendship with his captivating spouse. The film features an ensemble cast including Tye Sheridan, Luke Evans, and Lena Olin. The San Sebastián Film Festival will run from September 18 through 26.
