Netflix has unveiled a trailer for the latest installment of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s “Monster” anthology series, which will examine the infamous Lizzie Borden case. The fourth chapter in the limited series brings audiences to 19th-century New England, where a young woman stands accused of brutally murdering her parents with an axe. The project marks the first time the “Monster” franchise has centered on a female perpetrator, following previous seasons that explored the cases of Jeffrey Dahmer, Ed Gein, and the Menendez brothers.
Ella Beatty takes on the title role of Borden, a Sunday school teacher who faced trial for allegedly attacking her father and mother in 1893. Though she was acquitted by jury despite the shocking nature of the crimes, Borden’s name remains synonymous with one of America’s most notorious unsolved murders. The eight-episode series will explore themes of rebellion and liberation, depicting how Borden navigates her privileged yet restrictive family environment alongside her maid.
The ensemble cast includes Rebecca Hall as Borden’s stepmother, Charlie Hunnam as her father, and supporting roles from Billie Lourd, Joey Pollari, Sarah Paulson, and Jessica Barden. Murphy and Brennan co-created the series with Brennan serving as writer, while directors Max Winkler and Sarah Adina Smith helm the project. This marks another collaboration between the prolific producers on their ongoing true-crime anthology series.
