Mexican production company Martfilms has joined forces with filmmaker Mariana Rondón on her latest project, “Looking for Sam,” a hybrid documentary-drama that reunites cast members from her award-winning 2013 film “Bad Hair.” The new production is set to premiere at San Sebastian’s Europe-Latin America Co-Production Forum, blending narrative and non-fiction elements to explore themes of displacement, memory, and personal transformation.
The film follows two actors from the original production whose lives have diverged significantly since their collaboration over a decade ago. Actor Sam Lange, who portrayed a young character in “Bad Hair,” has pursued a modeling career on Paris fashion runways, while actress Samantha Castillo, who played his mother in the earlier film, relocated to Mexico. Through their separate journeys of emigration and reinvention, the project examines what it means to cross physical and psychological borders.
Rondón and her collaborator Marite Ugás of Sudaca Films describe the work as an exploration of identity and memory, questioning who individuals become when they leave their former lives behind. Martfilms’ Martha Orozco praised the partnership as a natural continuation of a shared creative vision, noting that “Bad Hair’s” groundbreaking examination of racism and homophobia inspired her confidence in Rondón’s resilient filmmaking approach. The production company, known for championing socially conscious cinema, has previously supported acclaimed international projects at major festivals including Cannes and Tribeca.
