Celtic’s pursuit of Torino midfielder Gvidas Gineitis has hit a significant obstacle after the Italian club rejected the Scottish side’s latest offer. According to reports, Torino deemed the proposal insufficient, with the Serie A outfit holding firm on their valuation of approximately £9 million for the 22-year-old Lithuanian international.
Manager Martin O’Neill had identified Gineitis as a key target to strengthen the club’s midfield options following the departure of Arne Engels. The energetic midfielder’s physical attributes and playing style appealed to the Celtic hierarchy, prompting multiple attempts to negotiate a deal. However, without a significant increase to their bid, Celtic appears unlikely to secure the player’s services at this stage.
Despite the setback with Gineitis, O’Neill’s transfer ambitions remain on track elsewhere. The club is reportedly close to finalizing deals for alternative midfield targets, including 19-year-old Dutch prospect Joel van den Berg from PSV Eindhoven and Danish midfielder Oliver Sorensen from Parma, who is expected to join on a loan arrangement with an option to purchase.
