South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster will assume a prominent role in Sunday’s Cook Out Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway, serving as the honorary pace car rider for the event. The governor will participate in the pre-race festivities and ride as a passenger in a Ford Mustang Dark Horse that will lead the field of competitors to the start of the race.
The Cook Out Southern 500 represents a significant moment in the NASCAR calendar, marking the inaugural race of the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series playoff competition. Darlington Raceway President Josh Harris expressed appreciation for McMaster’s involvement, noting the governor’s consistent advocacy for NASCAR and the track throughout his tenure in office.
Officials at the raceway pointed to McMaster’s instrumental contributions during the COVID-19 pandemic, when he supported efforts to bring NASCAR back to competition. In May 2020, Darlington hosted the Real Heroes 400, which became the first major professional sporting event to resume operations in the United States following pandemic-related shutdowns and marked NASCAR’s return after nearly two months away from racing.
The Southern 500 will take place during Labor Day weekend at the historic Darlington Raceway, a venue that has hosted racing since 1950. Known by nicknames including “The Lady in Black” and “The Track Too Tough to Tame,” the facility features a distinctive 1.366-mile egg-shaped configuration that makes it one of the sport’s most challenging venues for competitors.
