Acclaimed actor Manoj Bajpayee will portray Mahatma Gandhi for the first time in an upcoming film directed by Sudhir Mishra. The project, produced by filmmaker Anubhav Sinha’s Benaras Mediaworks alongside Narendra Hirawat and NH Studioz, will explore a lesser-known period from India’s independence struggle. The film examines a specific 21-day chapter in Gandhi’s life when the nation was transitioning to freedom and Delhi emerged as the seat of power.
According to director Mishra, the narrative delves into Gandhi’s unexpected decision to step away from the center of influence during this pivotal moment. Rather than representing a retreat, the film frames this choice as a personal reinvention where the leader charted a new course. While historical records document the major events of that era, the film aims to uncover the deeper motivations and personal dimensions behind this significant decision.
Actor Saurabh Shukla has been added to the ensemble cast. The project marks Mishra’s return to theatrical releases since his 2023 film “Afwaah” and arrives as the director approaches four decades in Hindi cinema. Mishra is a three-time recipient of India’s National Film Award, with previous acclaimed films including “Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi” and “Is Raat Ki Subah Nahin.” Bajpayee, also a multiple award winner, brings his considerable talent to this historical drama.
