The 31st Busan International Film Festival is paying tribute to revered Korean actor Ahn Sung-ki through a special retrospective program showcasing his most acclaimed work. The curated selection, titled “Those Beautiful Years, Ahn Sung-ki,” features six films personally chosen by the late actor before his death earlier this year, spanning his career peak in the 1980s and 1990s. The retrospective will conclude the nationwide commemorations honoring Sung-ki’s contributions to cinema and culture.
Each screening of the retrospective will be accompanied by appearances from distinguished collaborators who worked closely with Sung-ki throughout his extensive career. Notable filmmakers and fellow performers, including directors Lee Jang-ho, Bae Chang-ho, and Chung Jiyoung, as well as actors Kim Bo-Yeon and Bae Jong-ok, will participate in the festival events. Additionally, the festival plans to release a comprehensive essay collection examining Sung-ki’s artistic legacy in partnership with the Korean Film Archive.
In a separate development, the Asian Contents & Film Market has established a new Country of Honor designation, with Thailand selected as its inaugural recipient. The recognition acknowledges Thailand’s significant contributions to the regional film industry and builds upon established connections between Thai and South Korean cinema. According to Thai Film Directors Association president Chookiat Sakveerakul, the partnership aims to expand opportunities for Thai filmmakers while fostering greater international collaboration.
The 31st Busan International Film Festival will run from October 6-15, with the accompanying Asian Contents & Film Market operating from October 10-13.
